For Shrooly owners

Shrooly shut down? Your options

Updated

We could not find a public shutdown notice, but many owners report the Shrooly app no longer signs in and pods are hard to get. You still have four good options: revive the chamber with free software, run it by hand, build a simple chamber of your own, or grow in a plastic tub. The first keeps the hardware you paid for working.

Did Shrooly shut down?

The company has not said so in public, but its last customer update was July 31, 2025, and owners report the app and support stopped working after that.

The Shrooly customer update, July 31, 2025 is the last one posted. Since August 2025 owners report sign in errors and unanswered support. Read what happened to Shrooly for the dated details and sources.

Can I revive my Shrooly with free software?

Yes, free open source software called OpenShrooly replaces the stock software and runs the chamber on your own Wi-Fi with no Shrooly app.

It was created by Graham Stewart (OpenShrooly.com, project page by Graham Stewart) and installs from Chrome or Edge with a USB-C cable in about 5 minutes. You set temperature, humidity, fresh air, and light from the chamber's own web page, or pick a stage by stage grow profile. Shroom Labs adds an optional phone dashboard. Read reuse your Shrooly for the steps and what to back up first.

Can I run a Shrooly by hand without the app?

Owners report the chamber can run stock manual programs from its own buttons, but we could not confirm how well that works without the app.

The Shrooly support article: Connection issues article says the chamber needs internet and Bluetooth to start a new guided cultivation, so a new guided grow may not start. If your chamber still runs, keep the lid closed, mist the block two or three times a day if the humidity reading drops, and open it for fresh air several times a day. Use the fresh air planner and the species grow profiles to know what to aim for. Without a pod, put in any ready to fruit block that fits, as in Shrooly pods: how to refill or replace one.

Can I build my own mushroom chamber instead?

Yes, a clear storage box or small shelf tent with a humidifier, a small fan on a timer, and a light on a timer does the same job.

  • Box. A clear plastic box or a small grow tent, big enough for one or two blocks.
  • Humidity. A small ultrasonic humidifier on a humidity controller, or a layer of damp perlite and misting.
  • Fresh air. A small fan on a cycle timer, sized with the fresh air planner. Oyster rooms are run at 4 to 6 air changes an hour.
  • Light. Room light or a small LED on a timer for about 12 hours a day.
  • A thermometer and humidity meter. So you can match the numbers in the profile.

Start with how much humidity and fresh air mushrooms need.

Can I just grow mushrooms in a tub?

Yes, a clear plastic tub with holes for air, misted a few times a day, grows oysters and most other kits well.

Drill or cut a few holes in the sides, set the opened block inside on a rack or a layer of damp perlite, and fan the lid a few times a day. Keep it in indirect light at room temperature. It is the cheapest option and works for most beginner species. Read how to grow mushrooms at home, and use grow kit not growing if it stalls.

Which option should I choose?

If you have a Shrooly, revive it with free software first, since it keeps the chamber you paid for working and costs nothing.

If you would rather not install anything, run it by hand with a ready to fruit block. If the chamber is broken, a simple box or tub grows the same mushrooms with a little more daily care. Whatever you choose, the free grow profiles give you the conditions for each species, and the grow timeline calculator gives you the dates.
